![]() ![]() Fisk then uses the valuable information taken from her to systematically destroy Matt Murdock's life.Ĭornered and taken completely by surprise, the Netflix version of Matt Murdock can be seen facing off against Wilson Fisk and several goons in civilian attire. She betrays Murdock in exchange for a shot of heroin. In Frank Miller's "Born Again," Karen Page is a drugged out pornographic actress and nothing like Woll's depiction from the Netflix show. Betraying Matt's identity at this point would not have gotten them anywhere, and even if it would have, these versions of Foggy and Karen would never sully their best friend's memory by betraying him to Wilson Fisk. My one major takeaway from this book is a fuller understanding of the after-effects of systemic childhood abuse. The novel is also refreshing in its depiction of race, gender and sexual orientation. Over the decades, their friendship endures, through spats, early career struggles, J.B.’s drug addiction and, most of all, dealing with the effects of Jude’s unspeakably abusive past on his current life, although Jude is terrified to tell anyone about that abuse. becomes a hip downtown artist the well-off Malcolm is a well-known architect Willem goes from waiter to movie star practically overnight Jude is a lawyer, first at the D.A.’s office and then at a prestigious corporate firm, where he works himself up and becomes a partner. It can also be done by itself, with no intention of doing a space clearing ceremony or even the knowledge that such a ceremony exists. Her first story was published when she was twenty-six. Poetry was something she read and memorized by the age of sixteen was sending out stories to magazines. She read biographies of writers, and was already studying – on her own – the way American writers, in particular, told their stories. During the summer months of her childhood she played outdoors, either with her brother, or, more often, alone, and this is where she developed her deep and abiding love of the physical world: the seaweed covered rocks along the coast of Maine, and the woods of New Hampshire with its hidden wildflowers.ĭuring her adolescent years, Strout continued writing avidly, having conceived of herself as a writer from early on. She was also drawn to books, and spent hours of her youth in the local library lingering among the stacks of fiction. It’s a testament to Cleeton’s writing style as well that even though we don’t see Beatriz’s point of view through this story, we can still feel her character. I think it’s impressive when an author can illicit strong emotional responses from very few words. When I reread, I think I’ll work on annotating and fully immersing myself in the experience. I remember the first time I read this – I actually listened to it – so I feel like I may have sped through it too quickly. ![]() I know that I need to do a reread of this one so that I can finally get into Beatriz’s story. In this book, even though we don’t hear from Beatriz, it’s always great to see her through Elisa’s eyes. ![]() I won’t say what happened to evoke such a response, but I love that it’s in there. On top of that, the idea of love as a social concept or an actual emotion is discussed heavily, turning around the minds of those who agree and those who disagree with love.Īnother one of the main themes explored is hope. Many of the characters find themselves in situations where they believe they are in love, when really their relationship is abusive, broken, or just plain nonexistent. Love is one of the main themes of We All Looked Up, specifically diving into the idea of loving the right person. Even though you know that hoping for happiness to come to these four teens is pointless, you still find yourself wishing for their survival and for their love to remain now and forever more. Each character has their own unique and definitive personality, and exhibits a sense of love and bitterly true honesty. Tommy Wallach is a phenomenal writer, crafting a magnificent story like no other. When I say I couldn’t put this book down, I thoroughly mean it. Where do I even begin? Let me just start by saying that We All Looked Up is hands down, by far one of the most incredible, amazing, and spectacular stories I have ever read. ![]() ![]() ![]() With a touch of Hawaiian culture, Liquid Comfort is a stirring tale of surf, addiction, determination and unconditional love. Although not every relationship is explained to its fullest, the book contains everything readers need to know about Murderbot and its team. At others, it’s the feeling of intruding on someone as they try to understand exactly how to relate to their fellow sentient beings-and often fail.
